On this date in 2005, a newly formed Hurricane Katrina made landfall in south Florida. At the time, Katrina was only a minimal hurricane, producing winds of 80 mph. Still, 9 people were killed, mainly by falling tree limbs & debris. Damage was estimated at approximately $2 billion in Florida. Over 1.5 million customers were reportedly without power for up to a week.
The storm would later emerge back out into the Gulf of Mexico and we all know what is to come a few short days later in Louisiana and Mississippi. Look for a more extensive entry concerning the second landfall of Katrina on August 29th.
