Severe Weather Outlook for Today, Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Above is the latest severe weather outlook for today from the SPC in Norman, OK. Severe thunderstorms are forecast within the yellow shaded area on the image.

Thunderstorms are continuing across northcentral and central Iowa this morning, in association with activity that originally developed further to the Northwest on Monday evening.  This activity is expected to continue weakening in the short term, but may reorganize or develop into new activity further to the Southeast later this afternoon.

Otherwise, thunderstorms are forecast to develop across western and central portions of the outlook area by mid to late afternoon, with large hail & damaging winds being the primary threats.  An isolated tornado or two also cannot be ruled out, particularly in association with any thunderstorms that are more isolated and in their first few hours of development.

Just like last night, thunderstorms that develop across this region this afternoon & evening are likely to organize into one or more complexes that will continue Southeast into adjacent portions of the Plains overnight tonight and early Wednesday morning.  Damaging winds and occasional hail would  be the primary severe weather threats by that time.

Scattered strong to locally severe storms are also forecast across portions of southern Arizona, southwest New Mexico and parts of the Southeast U.S. this afternoon & evening (near where the wording "See Text" is located on the above image).  Strong, gusty winds and some spotty hail would be the primary threats with this activity.
