Severe Storms Likely Kansas/Oklahoma Later Today...

Much of the attention of the weather world is currently focused on Saturday, due to the pronounced threat of significant severe storms and tornadoes, and rightly so.  None-the-less, we need to also pay attention to this afternoon and evening, as there will be a threat of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes later today as well...

The latest severe weather outlook for today and tonight is shown above.  Severe storms are likely within the yellow shaded area, from extreme northwest Texas across much of Oklahoma into southern Kansas and southwest Missouri.

Thunderstorms had a hard time developing very far to the South in the Plains yesterday, mainly due to a lack of deep low level moisture.  The low level moisture profile has deepened across the region overnight, and that trend will continue into the day today, resulting in at least scattered severe thunderstorm development across the outlook area by late afternoon or this evening.

Once developed, severe storms will be capable of producing very large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes.  Hail may exceed 2 inches in diameter, especially within the red shaded and black hatched area on the image below:

Although the areal coverage of tornado producing storms is not expected to be as great today as it will be tomorrow, a few tornadoes could become strong and/or long tracked, particularly in association with any isolated, well organized supercell storms that form later today.  This will particularly be the case within the yellow shaded and black hatched area on the image below:

The threat of severe weather will continue into at least early tonight, especially toward the Eastern edge of the severe weather outlook area, so folks in this region should make sure to have a way to receive severe weather warnings at night tonight.

If you live across the severe weather outlook area for later today and tonight, make sure to monitor NOAA Weather Radio, local media or another trusted source for later information and possible warnings.  Take a few minutes early today to review severe weather safety and preparedness information and identify your best sheltering option before severe weather threatens.
