Bitter Cold Headed toward the Midwest / Ohio Valley Region...

Bitter cold, arctic air is making a move Southward, with readings plummeting into the single digits and teens this morning along the Canadian border with North Dakota and Minnesota.  The lighter lavender and purple shaded areas to the North of the border on the current temperature map above represent temperatures that are below zero (F).

This cold air will continue to spill toward the South/Southeast through the weekend and into Monday.  Temperatures will drop to levels that are below normal to well below normal within the green and purple shaded areas on the GFS computer model forecast image below, which is valid 6pm CST on Monday:

Bitter cold wind chills will fall below zero across much of this same region, including the Ohio Valley on Monday night and early Tuesday.

At this time, it appears that the southcentral U.S. will be spared the worst of this particularly cold outbreak, with the center of the cold core expected to shift more toward the Ohio Valley region early next week.  There are signs, however, that another shot toward next weekend will affect more of the middle and lower Mississippi River Valley and portions of the southern Plains.  We'll have more on that over the coming days...
